About ALIGHT

My Teaching Philosophy

I’m confident that students of all ages gain advantages in life by completing their writing projects. On time. With clarity. With sophistication. Using their own voice and perspective. It’s my honor to support their efforts.

As a tutor, I’m positioned to guide students in developing their intellectual selves and in getting their work done. My tutoring sessions are grounded by defining session goals and recognizing student strengths—such a foundation fosters creativity and engagement, letting the work flow. When needed, I introduce productivity tools for students to experiment with. Students can hold on to the ones they like best, and use them to enhance their independent and collaborative endeavors.

As founder of ALIGHT Tutoring + Test Prep, I initially sought to provide learning support to my local community. The transition to virtual Zoom lessons was a necessity during the Covid-19 pandemic, and now Zoom is a welcome learning tool, dramatically redefining learning communities. Most students embrace the convenience of one-on-one virtual lessons and the opportunity to be part of nation-wide study groups.

My Background

Obtaining my Master and Bachelor of Arts in English Literature at San Francisco State University involved years of intensive reading and writing. During that time, I gained a broad knowledge of written works and developed personal strategies for the efficient completion of writing projects. My tutoring practice is informed by the challenges and joys of my own studies.

I have more than 15 years of experience teaching writing skills to young adults and adults. Over the years, I’ve been part of many different learning communities and have tutored

* high school subjects to at-risk youth in the San Francisco USD
* English Composition to college-level students at SF State University
* Business Math and Microsoft Office to adults re-entering the workforce
* AP Literature & Composition Exam prep via Zoom
* strategic test-taking via Zoom

I have taught classes in Literature, English Composition, Contemporary Fiction, and Business Math. I currently offer literary presentations for students of any age, especially students preparing to take the AP LIT exam. I offer small group presentations for adults and seniors that take shape around contemporary literary works and are designed to spark creativity and build group rapport.

In my professional career beyond tutoring, I’ve provided administrative, financial, and communications support to higher education programs. I’ve also worked as an editor and freelance writer.

I host two online book clubs that have been meeting for many years. I write daily, practice Qigong daily, and take long walks at sundown.
